Book's book

Postby Sparx Macgyver » Fri Jun 18, 2010 8:40 pm

Not his bible, as I've seen another thread on it. No, this is the object he's holding when he's telling Mal about how he became married. Esentially, I'd like to make one, but I'm just curious if anybody else had ideas about what ti was. To me it appears to be a book cover, some different pens or stylus', and PDA, or e-reader. If that all lines up, I have a good way of not using PDA/e-reader...but just wanted to see what ya'all had to say about it.

Here's a few screen caps of the scene.

Welcome!

It's called a Universal Encyclopedia. And I think it actually belonged to the good doctor, Simon Tam.

The actual prop is in the first Firefly Companion volume, page 42.

There was lots of discussion over on the RPF many moons ago about what the prop was made from: http://www.therpf.com/f9/firefly-delete ... prop-1685/ (most of the pics are gone, sadly)

You can read through that thread for the details, but the shell used for the prop is a Symnova Aluminum Organizer.

I will post some pics of mine later. I got it on e/bay a long time ago. I'm sure they still pop up from time to time.

Thank you!

I'm a member over at RPF too, I just thought this place might be better to ask first since it is, well, an FF prop place. :D

I'll go look over there. thanks.

Yeah, I don't think we've talked about this prop much over here, if at all! Shame on us.

@Frank, might I suggest this thread be moved to the recurring props thread and retitled "Universial Encyclopedia"?

I believe it appears in Our Mrs. Reynolds, War Stories, and in a deleted scene. Please correct me if I'm wrong, anyone.

I seem to recall that kurtyboy made a plate with the text etched in. didn't someone try to make the colored rods?

Frank, did you ever make any more progress on your encyclopedia?

Not really.
The only parts I have are a etched brass plate for the left side that Kurtyboy had made and some plastruct square tile sheet for the right side.

Kurtyboy worked on the rods and the bars for it but I haven't heard anything regarding this lately.

The rods were actually stylus pens.

I have a Symnova that I've wanted to make into an encyclopedia for a long time.
