Mal's other weapons

Episode 13 - Heart of Gold

Mal's other weapons

Postby Bronson BB » Wed Feb 10, 2010 8:57 pm

I'm going to just go ahead and consider this my latest `Versey acquisition.

Remember at the beginning of the episode, when Mal is pulling maintenance on his weapons?

He's got a revolver just in front of his left hand that Inara later places the 'small, concealable firearm' beside.

Turns out the prop guys may have got a Uberti reproduction of the Colt Single Action Army for this Scene. The IMFDB calls it the Colt, anyway.
Uberti calls it the 1873 Cattleman.

Well, I just got me a Uberti.

Last night, I went shooting with it.

And for the first time out since the late eighties, I'd say I didn't do too badly with it.

Anyone know what the other members of his collection are?

SWEET, Nothing like multi-tasking. Cool prop and bad a** hip accessory all in one.

That is a nice addition to your collection, and some mighty fine shooting!

I know this is an old thread, but the gun that is on the rag in front of Mal is a Schofield revolver, made by Smith & Wesson. Uberti and Navy Arms make repros nowadays, a bit spendy though but a cool old gun.

Good eye!
The Schofield is indeed cool for its day, because it was a large caliber, break-open revolver.
In a time when the Colts were unloaded and reloaded one shell at a time,
the Schofield could dump all the empties and be reloaded without indexing the cylinder.

I used a Schofield revolver as the basis for a character weapon for my fan film, "Fool Me Twice".

The silenced, revolver carbine belongs to Quintan Shang, a brash young Independent who lost a brother in the Unification War.

The worst part about the Schofield are the grips.
Too small, badly shaped and crowded against the trigger guard.
I replaced mine with grips patterned off the Mal pistol.

Don't panic, that's a Denix dummy gun that I cut up!

Thank you for that!
I may have to get myself one of the Uberti's.

Looks to be item #348500 on their page. 1875 No. 3 - 2nd Model Top Break.
(I'll have to pop the DVD in when I get home to be sure. The grip might be shaped differently.

EDIT

OK, I take that back. I see a lanyard ring, and the hammer looks different.
I think it looks more like item #348579 No. 3 New Model Russian Top Break on the same page.

The Russian model has a second finger dingus Like Jayne's pistol though. Looks like they removed that somehow for the captains pistol.
Or, that's an actual Schofield or something. *shrug*

Dixie Gun Works sells them, but they run around $920. Mal actually breaks his open when he is talking to Inara.
