I agree. I'm looking at this list and thinking there should be Navy units, too, if only so the Independents can leave one planet and engage the enemy in space or on another planet. That's one thing the Canon couldn't *show* us due to cancellation: we only have a couple of flashbacks to show us what the Independent military was like and it's heavily biased toward ground forces. If you're fighting an interplanetary war, it would make sense that the Independents would have ships for transporting troops, right?

Or ...

Perhaps the Independents *didn't* have ships. Maybe the Independents were stuck on the ground wherever they happened to be? Less plausible but possible, at least in the beginning. If they were without ships, I expect the first order of the day was to steal ships from the enemy or commandeer civilian ships for military use. I can't imagine a repressive government allowing the enemy to have its own shipyards and munitions manufacturing facilities once war was declared--or even BEFORE the shooting started. I expect the Alliance came in and took over those industries to keep them out of Independent hands. That could be the cause of quite a few battles right there, as at least one shipyard was located on Hera (going by the maker's plaque on Serenity).

In my version of the Verse, a lot of industries were located on the Border and the Rim due to NIMBY (Not In My Backyard) and due to cheap labor (the poor settlers). However, I also expect something like the Cromwellian laws historically imposed on Ireland to also apply here: much if not all of the industrial products were for off-world use and restricted/prohibited with regard to the people who actually made them, much like the wheat grown in Ireland was strictly for off-shore sale and it was illegal to buy or sell it to the Irish tennant farmers who grew it. It might seem harsh, but it's a way to keep a people too subjugated to rebel against you. In denying them food or tech, they would have less to throw at you when revolution came.

But I digress ...

I would like to see more Naval and Air units represented. Military Intelligence, too. Given how unequal the technology and spacecraft distribution was between the two sides, I think that stealing or copying to make up for what the Independents lacked would have been a high priority before and during the war.

Also, do you think that there would be POW units? Say, survivors of the camps who created a second group association in addition to their assigned military one? Putting aside the living conditions in the camps and their administration/regulation, I think that it would logical that survivors would want to keep in touch with each other after war's end.

In the same vein, would there be something like a USO organization for the Independents? Something that the civilian Independents would organize and promote as a way to support their troops?

Again, just thinking aloud as I draw parallels from RL history.

The Independents movement only just began and there would be millions of soldiers in play across hundreds of planets. I'm not troubled. A thing has to grow a little and evolve.

From what I remember of canon and expanded 'verse, the Alliance had POW camps (Mal and Zoe were in one following the Serenity Valley battle), but as an act of benevolence they set all prisoners free after the treaty was signed. Surely the indenpendents would've had some sort of POW camp as well.

USO, seems to me, would be a strictly an Alliance organization. The browncoats were akin to guerrilla fighters than an organized, funded, and supported military. Avoiding the possible disagreements by running a parallel with modern warfare, I like to think of the Alliance as the British and the Indepedents like the American Revolutionaries. Some groups maybe be better equipped than others, but they're all fighting in and around their own communities.

During the pilot, when Mal talks about the "angels above raining fire on them" I'd like to think he's referring to some sort of airforce. However, I also see these as being retro-fitted civilian ships. The Alliance would taken control of the major manufacturing regions very early on.

I would like to see someone build a group around one of the 20 'air tank squads', as mentioned in a cut scene featuring Simon and Zoe. We need to pressure Sean Kennedy into designing the 'air tank'.

Air Tank... Airborne Artillery... it could happen. When I came up with the concept of the 42nd AA, it was and is heavily influenced by my love of Heinlein, especially The Moon is a Harsh Mistress. Mike's Vengeful Hammer is a nod to Mycroft, aka Mike, and "his" tactic of flinging cargo containers at the Earth during their rebellion. A targeted meteor strike is not something to take lightly. I also wanted to tie it into the Archangel Michael, since Malcolm refers to them as Angels when he thinks they're coming in.
May have been on the losin' side, still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I talked to Sean and he mentioned that Lynn Blackson (of the defunct Cortex shipyards) did an 'air tank' design, but I don't remember it at all.
