Call for contributors! 2014 CSTS packet for Fireflyprops

Postby Yellowjacket » Sun Nov 10, 2013 7:31 pm

The 2013 Can't Stop the Serenity season is wrapping up with the global auction on November 16th, and with the new season looming I would like to suggest Fireflyprops.net as a global sponsor for the prize packs.

Each year, CSTS accepts donations from sponsors to fill 60 prize packs that are then sent to all of the participating cities worldwide. The prize packs include toys, books, clothing etc, that can be auctioned off or raffled to raise money at screenings and shindigs for Equality Now and other local charities.

I suggest that we put together a 'postal pack' featuring dozens and dozens of print good items in one packet. These print items could be anything from bottle labels to currency. We have some very talented designers here that would all be listed in a write-up to be included in the packet and online. Many of you could contribute designs you've done in the past. Original, Verse-inspired projects would be strongly encouraged and each contributor would need to send finished, trimmed copies to me for assembly and inclusion. I suggest that we do contributions in increments of 100. The packs only call for 60, but the extras would allow each contributing member to get a packet and perhaps additional copies to be sold to non-contributing collectors or the Global auction.

So, say you have a credit bill you've created. You would print and trim 100 copies (or 200 copies if you wanted to bills in each packet). You would mail finished copies to me along with a short biography about yourself to be included in the contents sheet.

Items should be small enough to fit into a 6 x 9 envelope, either at size or folded. Items can include any of the following suggestions…

Currency
Ticket stubs
Racing forms
Railway tickets
Space Transit tickets
Food labels
Drink labels
Ship's papers
Licenses
Phone cards
I.D Cards
Stamps
Seals
Stickers
Signage
bookmarks
mini posters
brochures
Travel items

This is also your chance to create something all new. I will also be requesting postage stamps for the outside of the packet. If you are interested in doing this, please contact me and I will let you know the art requirements for those.

Once all the packets are labeled and assembled, I will send them to the global sponsor coordinator and they will post us officially online as a global sponsors under the heading 'Fireflyprops.net'. I'm going to work on a patch design specifically for this project, so watch for news on that in about a month.

The deadline for submissions is February 1st. This will allow me a good month to get the packs to global, barring any unforeseen problems. You may submit as many designs as you wish, but as the charities support human rights worldwide, please avoid content that promotes graphic violence, prostitution, pornography, etc.

We look forward to your contributions. Feel free to ask questions and make suggestions here.

What with being unemployed, I can't afford to have them printed, but I'll gladly donate the artwork for my ship's papers passenger list if someone else will have them printed up.
May have been on the losin' side, still not convinced it was the wrong one.

If some of you cannot afford printing, don't let that keep you from contributing. I'll do what I can here to cover a few things. We have local connections for printing when it comes to charity.

No, companion, or purn, stuff? Dang! Well I'll see if I can come up with something clean, but it wont be easy. :)

I have always been a fan of those things, where you punch them out, fold, and past them together, to make a 3D paper prop. the problem is, that would take a lot of work to trim 100 of them. Like my Food bar thingy, I posted a couple years ago (witch needs a little tweaking), it would take forever to cut out all the details on 100 of them. (unless you had something like one of those "Cricket" printers, that prints, and cuts. Man I want one of those.)

I do have that Book's bible, dust jacket, and now that I have a copy of the correct Bible, I could make it even more accurate, but that would take a LOT of black ink to print, 100.

I'll see if I can come up with something new. I have had a new fruity oaty bar rapper on the back burner for quite a wile now, along with a handful of new circular barcodes, so maybe I'll do a new label. We will see. I'm working on quite a bit for Christmas gifts right now, so I may not have anything to post on this, until the first of the year.

Oh, sorry, that's my long winded way of saying, I'm in, if I can come up with something.

We need to declare what we're planning to do, so we all don't make, say, 100 of the same movie credit notes, and William ends up with 600 or 1200 identical bills.

Unless six slightly different versions of the same bill is OK with you...

All this color copying isn't going to be cheap, and I'd hate for someone to drop $15 or more on something that's already been made by somebody else.

Maybe we should each stick to things we've made ourselves, and avoid the potential overlap in things we have in common (ie scans of the movie bills)... If so, maybe William should be in charge of the 'art' held in common.

I've spent some time this morning tweaking my Bank of the Border Moons notes, trying to improve the legibility of some of the Chinese. Fixed a few minor things that bugged me. I've also revised my Lilac postcard, because I accidentally overwrote the file while I was designing my Angel postcard. Which reminds me, I've got to do this month's postcards soon. Gotta borrow some tan stock and write a blurb for the back. Now I'm off to meet a local Browncoat who wants to put together a CSTS showing in my area. I think I'm going to be his graphic design guy.

I agree, but I'm not sure what I'm doing yet. I can tell you, that it will be something of my own. Brand new, or something old, I've done, but it will be all mine.

When I get around to working on this, I'll show YJ via PM, before I go printing 100 of them. I would like to save what ever it is, just for this. If I post it publicly, and everyone prints out their own copy, then it kind of mkaes it less special for the CSTS event. (Think of it as kind of an excusive. ) But I'm sure, pics of what ever it is will be posted at some point, and once I hand it (what ever it is) over, I really wont care what it done with it at that point. (post it, share it, hord it, throw it away. what ever.)

I'm glad you mentioned copies though. I was worried about the wear and tear on my old printer, and all the ink it would burn up. (and time it would take) But, print a couple good ones out, and tak them to Kinko's, and copy them. That is a lot better. (still have to do all the trimming, but maybe I could hire some bums, or Monkeys. Yes, crazy space monkeys......:))
