Higgin's Lanter

Postby dsears30 » Tue Jun 07, 2016 3:33 am

It took awhile, but I found one of the lantern’s that matched Boss Higgin’s lantern from “Jayne’s Town”. It’s a Vintage 1800’s Ankerlicht Ankerlight Nautical Ship Light Lantern.
Once it arrived I found it could be used as a wall mount or rope mounted lamp.
The bottom section of mine has roughly a 5” circular hole in the base and a 6” glass plate that covers it from the inside. This lamp doesn’t come apart so the glass was loose inside the base. Plus the lamp has wonderful patina but also a lot of white rust from either salt water or chlorine.

as is

So I spoke with good ole Badger about the real one and learned a few things. One how they lit it, what they removed and that to get rid of the white powdery rust, I might have to take it to bare metal and start over. The first idea worked great, didn’t care to hear the second one. Although he was correct, the more I tried to remove, the more I found.

I was able to cover the bottom hole with a removable 6” plastic plate that has a 4” diameter PVC raised center. Using a round battery operated industrial camping style lamp for the lighting (3 light settings). Just removed the black cap and black side cage and a little dremel work and it worked perfectly.

So now the lantern is looking more like a copper penny, but once done, than I’ll give adding patina a try[/attachment]
