I actually have no problem with medics carrying sidearms for defense.
In my 'verse, the Independents medics carry small caliber handguns for self defense;
the Alliance troopers carry non-lethal sonic rifles for self defense.

This is not some moral superiority on the part of the Alliance,
just a reflection of greater technical resources.

Of course, like any human activity, individual actions and motivations can result in wildly differing outcomes.
Some Alliance troopers would accept medics armed with .32 caliber pistols as a sensible precaution;
other would be outraged at armed medical personnel and kill them the same as standard soldiers.

Back when I was hoping to make a whole cluster of short "In The 'Verse" flicks,
one of them on the planning board was a short about an Alliance med team which is captured.
They get put to work helping an Independent medical group
and some bonding takes place between the two head doctors; until,
some unfamiliar insignia and partially destroyed documents show up from being tossed in the underbrush,
a few of the wounded are overly agitated in the presence of the Alliance med team
and the remnants of a decimated squad (in to visit their wounded comrades)
accuse the Alliance med team of using captured Independent soldiers for parts
to save wounded Alliance troops.
The pieces of the puzzle add up to pretty convincing proof.
The Alliance doctor argues about the benefits of his work, too proud to dispute the truth of it.
The head Independent doctor pulls his pistol and shoots the three Alliance med personnel.
When questioned by a nurse as to what happened to "do no harm",
he can only wearily suggest she view it as field surgery,
to remove a cancer or infection before it spreads.

I don't normally go to dark stories,
but I wanted to address the people and doctors who have argued
that the results of the horrible experiments done in concentration camps, POW camps and Gulags
should be used in spite of the suffering of the victims,
and I wanted to hint of the dark side of the Alliance
that would lead to accepting the experimentation on River Tam.

OK, tangent mode off....

Now see? If that Fed doc had just *burned* the incriminating evidence instead of throwing it into the underbrush, he'd have gotten away with it. No matter where you go, no matter how far into the future you get, for some tasks, you will never be able to trump fire.

Hey, sometimes you just don't have time to light a fire without calling attention to yourself!
