browncoats rank insignias

Postby marc pasquin » Thu Dec 05, 2013 11:51 pm

(I might have originaly posted this in the wrong thread so sorry about double post)

Back when the show was pretty much all there was to go from, I tried to figure out from the few browcoats scenes what, if any mode of rank insignias might be used by them and these were the 2 possible system I came up with (with a large amount of speculation based on the browncoats being an expy of the confederates):

Obviously the second system would probably not work (or maybe as single coloured pins instead) based on further informations that came out since it would seem that the only differences between patches actualy made for the show varried only in the edges' colour. I have read somewhere that the 76th has been using US style insignias but I'd be curious to know if anyone came up with their own either using various readily available patches or designing something of their own.

The links aren't working for me either.

Hey! I can see it!

I think it fits in just right, and it makes sense.

I take this as an attempt to reconcile the wardrobe malfunction of Mal's triangle point-up patch
with the TV pilot's Lt.'s right side up writing/ triangle point down patch?

I have to admit, anything that turns the star into a pentagram, and goes against the;
triangle point down for Independents,
triangle point up for Alliance;
complicates things in a way that goes against my take on visual logic.
I've said it before, canon in the 'verse from the Whedons has been very sloppy.
If I can un-hear the "eight months you been on this boat" in the BDM SERENITY
and un-read a thirteen year period stretching out over twenty in A Shepherd's Tale,
I can un-see a patch sewn on upside down in the rush of production.

Other than my personal dislike for the "upside-down" enlisted ranks,
your organization is logical within itself,
and with dozens of worlds apparently bound together in a loose confederacy constituting the Independence movement,
your rank chart certainly is logical within the construct of the 'verse.
A little flip-flopping in MSPaint, and I'd like to add it to my Firefly graphics collection.

So, I went searching for better images, since the Imageshack links were broken, and found these.

Also found the jersey pic:

I got the large triangle patches, but was always a little disappointed I didn't get the 57th Overlanders patch.

If Marc logs back in, I see all sorts of Extended Universe applications waiting to be made...

After posting my old design, I had one of those moments that someone more melodramatic would call an epiphany. There is a system of insignias which, although having no canonicity whatsoever, would fit right in in my mind for the independents: The old chinese one.

There are a few reasons for that:

1- the chinese connection (sorely lacking in the uniforms)
2- was adopted during a civil war period
3- it's design of bars and stars fit with the independent flag
4- cosplayers with even limited skills could make them cheaply and fairly easily with felt, ribbon tape and studs/pin-on stars that can be found in many places.

I have slightly modified it to keep with the idea of confederate ranks and so it wouldn't just be a one-on-one export.
