So, here is the promised master model update.

Bear in mind the parts are just placed loosely together

I further shortened the front receiver to give it better balance.
The new side boxes are cast from my original 47A masters and are inverted as per Sidewinder's suggestion. I really like the purposeful look of these.
They will not be attached to the front receiver, so that the front piece will rotate away and leave these behind like open arms. Interesting :)

The hinge is the correct size and shape and roughly in the right place.

So, here's the latest update on the models.
Again, just parts placed together.
You can see the proportions are now in balance now that I added the front sight.
John insisted and he was right to, it needed a front sight.
Still a very long way to go, but feels like progress.

This is the configuration we're going with....

This is a neat design project,
but I haven't posted in it because I know I'm not a customer for the original concept,
which is a high end, already finished, metal prop.
In looking at the progressive mock ups,
I realized that this project would appeal to me as a three piece resin kit,
(pistol and two grip panels) in the $75-ish range.
If the twenty purchasers are found for the original concept, that's great,
but if not, perhaps the 3-piece resin offering is a way to keep all the design work from being for naught?

Another advantage to a resin kit for me is that if there are design elements that I would want to modify to suit me,
and I can do that on a resin kit without risking a major investment.
For instance,

I prefer the birds-head grip for a concealment pistol.
Although the posts that correctly note that the grip as designed by Badger is a better handling grip,
to me, the birds-head grip screams western-era pocket pistol.
Another snag-reducing pocket pistol feature is taking the front sight ramp into the body of the pistol.

Oh, and it has nothing to do with the design, but in my minds-eye,
Mal's pistol will always have a magazine with cartridges and never a power pack;
because Joss said his vision was that the Border planets would be low tech
and only Core Worlds would have high tech like lasers.
(Which of course, is what makes Rance Burgess' laser a big deal.)

I really like this design idea, and would hate to see it wither on the vine.

Thanks Mike,

Oh, we're not having a power pack :)

We're most likely having 5 or 6 round stacked mag which loads through the back of the tilted-up front section.
Looks like 9mm Auto is probably the caliber/cartridge.

A resin kit is by no means out of the question, but I want to do the Hero metal version first.
If we did a resin kit, it would be unlikely that it would be $75 or anything close to that, realistically.
Just too much work in the master models and tooling.

Meanwhile, here's the list.

Maybe post an interest list for a resin kit with the price point first to help finance the metal version?
I'm being honest in that with the house project, the Browncoat Ball, the resin Joatrash Vera
and starting my Trans Am project, funds are limited.
I do a $125 for the pistol, that is that many patches I don't do;
over a hundred and a quarter, I'm most likely out;
and I'll go back to butting out of your nifty project.

Thanks,
Mike

Thanks Mike,

Appreciate the interest and support.

I'd have to do the resin kit in one blast, done.
The main reason is that if it's in kit form someone, somewhere, will recast it almost right away and kill the market.
It's far less likely with a Hero metal piece precisely because of the investment required in the first instance, and the fact that there will be so few it'd be hard to disguise the source of the original model.

What I'd like to do is get enough interest to produce the metal version, then look at kits second.

Butt in whenever you like :)

Karl

I'll look into it and see what the viability is like.

Yes, I agree. I was thinking of not having one, but I think it adds an aggressive edge to the design and does balance the piece better visually.
