New Firefly Wallet Interest Thread.

Postby Badger » Sat Nov 19, 2016 9:49 am

This is the place to discuss and investigate what folk want in a new Firefly wallet.

The proposed new wallet will be around the same size as the old one, Bifold like a book, and landscape format. Horizontal rather than an upright, passport type wallet.

The interior will be made by a specialist company in the US. They have to follow their stock patterns so we'll have a choice, but a limited choice, of interior designs. I've always used the company and find their products and workmanship to be the best.

They have a range of 'vintage' interiors which I really like and are pre distressed and aged.

They tend to come in vintage whiskey tan or black and have four or six card pockets, with or without an ID holder attached. As combinations get more specific then the choices naturally become fewer.

The wallet shell is a different matter. We can have pretty much what we want.

I propose the shell is Oak tanned 'vintage' leather. This is a great leather and is made by a small family tannery here in the UK.

Since we're going with laser etching rather than impression stamping, we can have designs on the front and back, large or small, simple or detailed.

Discuss?
I said I'd do my best. I didn't say it would be any good.

My preferences:
vintage whiskey tan,
six card pockets, with an ID holder attached
Exterior designs: would like to see the Serenity nose art logo
Any idea on price yet, Badger? :)

I'm interested of course. I love the idea of the oak tanned leather. I'd love to see a classic logo. TG Freight would be cool.

Oak tanned, whiskey leather is very nice indeed.

6 card, with flip up ID holder is possible in a pre-distressed (aged) Buffalo leather interior. The liners are individually hand made from Buffalo hide in the USA.

The measurements would be around 4&3/4" by 3&1/4" closed, 9" by 3&1/4" open.

The Oak Tan shell could have the Serenity nose art on the front and a 'maker's mark' on the back, a code or logo or both. Smaller maybe.

The interior and shell will be hand stitched together, the edges stained, burnished and hand finished.

Wallets won't be less than $120.00 each. We're into best quality materials here.
I'm leaning toward no snaps or closures, just the beautiful leather.

the oak tan ages beautifully developing more character all the time.

I still lean away from using 'Serenity' specifically in the design, because I prefer an 'in 'Verse' wallet that could be carried by anyone, versus a collectible specifically from one ship and crew. That's what I loved about the last wallet. It was a general 'Firefly' wallet with no specific connection to one specific ship. Felt more like merchandise from a real company in the Verse, rather than a collectible outside the Verse.

I love the proposals on all fronts about the materials, shape, and closures.

Very good points YJ. The Serenity nose art was just something that I would like to have seen. You are right, there is a whole 'verse of design to draw from. I would be very interested to see what ideas anyone else has. Blue Sun, Alliance, Browncoat etc.
what do others think/want ?

I agree about it being in-universe. I like the idea of it as a real object, not a piece of memorabilia.

It could look 'scavenged' or repurposed. So, perhaps cut down material from a larger item. As such it could have a partial logo, or design.

With laser etching, we can go right to the edge. Bear in mind, though. the more laser time to cut and etch each wallet, the higher the price.

So the front could be part of a TG Freight or Blue Sun logo.

Or an offical document wallet, ship's papers wallet, maybe an engineering portfolio, or better yet perhaps a portion of the leather cover of the ship's pilot ot ops manual.
Yes, I like this one best.
