They didn't complete the 'Ship's Papers' run or the Mal holster.

Or the Warehouse 13 Farnsworth run, or put out all the shirts I did for them. Their method is to talk up some idea or plan. Either fail to do anything with it, or come out with something that costs up to triple what they said it would and is less than they said it was and then stop offering the item while quietly pretending that the "limited" edition is sold out when the realize few want the over priced stuff.

I didn't even bother to read that whole article, I just sigh and think of the squandered potential both in burned talent and ideas. If Gore truly was a fan and valued the license, he'd let it go...fat chance of that! See what I did there Karl? ;)

You're a funny guy, John!

:)

Truth is, that QMx orders a large edition size from suppliers. It was 500 in the case of the Mal holster.
This is to drive down the unit cost to them
They have a little trick where they say 'We'll order 500 units, but in pay in 100 unit batches'. They pay for 100 units, see how they sell, then pay for another 100.
When sales start to drop off (usually because they doubled the retail price), they don't ask for any more.

So does this mean the artist with the order for 500 has to pay out of pocket for 500 units worth of supplies, but get paid in 100 unit batches? If so, they're running the risk of having to eat the cost of 400 units.

(I've got so much stuff lying around that I've collected over the years that I could possibly not actually have to buy anything ... but not everyone's an art supplies junkie and pack rat like me.)

It's not really a question of simply having stuff around.

If we take the Mal holster as an example, I had to have press knives made. These are tools which 'cookie cut' the shapes of the holsters' components out of leather. They are made by specialists and have to be used on powerful hydraulic presses. The tools' costs were amortized over 500 units, not 200.
So, I got to bear the cost of the tooling.

Also, I had leather dyed to specific colours for the Mal rig. This can only be justified in large batches. I had to bear the cost of that, too.

Works out great for QMx though. No overhead, no investment in tooling or materials, no stock held over 100 units.

I supported QMx from the money packs on, until they stopped with stuff I wanted to buy. Not to mention the high cost of shipping, compared to the size and weight of the item. like the patch they had. I wanted one, just could not pay the high postage.

I just don't see anything they offer I want, so no more orders. UNLESS, they listen to us fans...really listen AND OFFER WHAT WE WANT!

Dear God, Badger. The more I hear about QMx's practices, the more I regret giving them my money--even though I love what I bought from them. However, like AZSneed, it has been some time since they've offered anything I wanted to buy. I will be completing the LDH set--a departure from me as I rarely buy anything that is 3D--and if they do another ship keychain in gold or silver metal, I will buy that. These are clearly sets and for the best value over time, the sets need to be complete, so I'm committed to buy those. Otherwise, it would have to be a pretty damned impressive paper item before I'll give them my money again.

Out of curiosity, in a perfect world, what products and items would you guys want from them regarding the Firefly/Serenity license?

Oh boy. Have a seat. Grab a Snickers. You're gonna be here awhile. ;)

I want:

1. More blueprints. And I mean blueprints, with scaled measurements so I could conceivably build Serenity in my backyard. (Not that my yard is big enough to hold her or anything but as long as it's my fantasy, let's say it is.)

2. I want more paper props. I want to know what a pre-printed maintenance schedule log page looks like. I want to know what a pilot's license looks like. I want the Firefly Engineering Manual. I want popular magazines off the newsstands of the Verse. I want a newspaper, too. I want to have labels off popular foods and sundries. What's Inara's favorite tea? Kaylee's favorite candy bar? Jayne's favorite ... uh ... yeah, that. thing. he uses. All those products have labels and generally that means paper. Or an image made to be printed onto something. And don't even get me started on the prolific topic of "Pocket litter": all those myriad slips of paper and tickets and such that you cram into your pockets over the course of a day or a week or a year. Fuel receipts. Parking chits. Monetary scrip. Gum wrappers. Boarding Passes. Bathroom Passes. Whatever! It may be 500 years in the future but from what I've managed to glimpse, it still isn't a paper-free civilization. Paper's just too damned handy to give up. Oh, and let's not forget the merits of Origami.

3. I want more patches. I have the small Air Cav patch, the one QMx marketed as being a shoulder patch. I've one on my hat--the very hat pictured in their gallery before they took it down. Andy Gore was very nice about using my picture.--and I've one to spare. I believe my third went to a member here. (You know who you are.) I would like about a dozen more of those but I would also like more of everything else. What about service patches for military and civilian ships? What about logo patches for commercial space stations and "truck stops" that service ships? Red Sun handles the Cortex signalling equipment and relay stations but to date, all we have for a logo is what Ben Mund made for his ship's papers and that got ported over to the QMx version of the same. And QMx eroded the image of the original, so it's harder to read. But yeah--more of that. Hell, if QMx's Verse map is Canon, then we have three other suns that haven't gotten their own logo yet: White Sun (Bai Hu) for the Core, Kalidasa (Xuan Wu) for ... well, Kalidasa (which is yellow gold), and Georgia (Huang Long) which is a lighter yellow.

Like I said: more patches please.

4. Pins and other small items.
What are combat pilot insignia pins like? What sort of stripes do sergeants wear? I'm not picky--Fed or Browncoat--I just wanna know. Do kids who do well in school get scholastic medals? What sort of ceremonial brush set do you get when you pass the government service exams (like the Mandarins of old) and enter civic service? Is there really a King of Londinium? Or was Mal being sarcastic, the way we are when we say "When I become El Presidente Dictator por Life ... "

(What? You mean my husband is the only one who says that? Dang. I was really looking forward to leaf blowers being outlawed ....)

Seriously, though. If there's a King of Londinium, then he's got to have ceremonial symbols of office. What would they be? If there's a King for Londinium, is there a corresponding Asian head of state for Sihnon? Grand Chairman of the Party, perhaps?

What would motorized bicycles look like?

Do speedsters have Cadillac fins?

Can you still get those little dried silver fishies to sprinkle on your rice like I had when I was a kid? If so, what would their package look like?

So ... Julian, you understand the worm can you've just opened up, right? Other people call it a mess. I call it my brain. LOL!

In all seriousness, while I wouldn't mind having the little fishies, I would really like to see the Verse filled out for us more than it has been already.

Since QMx isn't going to do it, we'll have to do it for ourselves. In the end, it's the best of everything: *WE* make the creative decisions. We get to decide what gets made. We don't have to cut corners for profits' sake or shareholders. In the end, it's all us ... making it in a very special way, all ours. ;)
