Mal pistol display solutions

Postby ReaverReject » Thu Feb 11, 2010 9:52 am

Since I'm on the hook for the 47A, I'd like to see how everyone is displaying their current series and/or film pistol replicas: stands, presentation box, diorama, shadowbox, etc., so I can be inspired to build one of my own.

Ideally, I'd love to display the series version, film version, and perhaps the Boo pistol together, as I believe they'd make a fine and logical set.

Thanks! :)

Here's a little homemade display box I had made a couple of years ago for my resin Philippe pistol.

Image

Just a simple basswood box and some thin trim. It's backed with a piece of gray matte board and uses 2 wooden pegs screwed through the back to support the pistol. A piece of plexi slots into the front. I used 4 little pieces of angled brass strip for the corners. (I'm lazy and wanted something easy to cover the seams. :) )
I've since sold the resin pistol but I still have the display case. I'm wondering if it will be rugged enough for the 47A. :?:

I'm working on a display case for the 47A right now. I found a nice cheap case that has the perfect size for the pistol, the spare mag and maybe a display plaque.

Please ignore my shitty looking Sidkit Mal

I like the presentation box idea - it displays the pistol elegantly, lending it more real-worldliness, as it mimics pistols cases & dueling sets of old...not to mention Weta thought it was a good idea as well for its steam-punk ray guns! ;)

I'm going to start looking for distressed and/or aged boxes at antique shops and flea markets. What's the overall length of the Mal pistol again?

Also, has anyone ever made "display-only" bullets for the pistol? What would you guys recommend? I'd probably lay 6 (or however many it takes to load the magazine) in a row below the barrel.

Thanks!

I found a Colt Dragoon box on eBay.

Right now eBay has a bunch of cases that can be modified to fit the Mal pistol.
I just bought two glass front cases for my Jubal Early and my Yo-Saf-Bridge pistol.
Prices range from $35 to $100-plus.

My Sidkit Mal pistol is about 15" long, so 16" would be the minimum.
My Colt box is 18" inside and I like the proportions.

Far as ammo, the M-1 Carbine round is the most "real-life' accurate.
It fits the length,
it is rimless so it would feed in a semi-auto design,
and its diameter would allow 6 rounds in the magazine.

The movie display round used was a .38 Special.
This is a poor choice in a display meant to look "real-life" because
the round is rimmed and would be likely to jam in a box magazine
and the larger diameter round reduces the magazine capacity to five rounds
( a foolish choice in a 'verse filled with autoloaders with 7 to 18 round magazines.

I'm making custom ammo for my Mal pistol display.
6 rounds FMJ (Full metal jacket-the standard round nose bullet)
6 rounds JHP (Jacketed hollow point)
6 rounds AP (Armor piercing in a sabot)
6 rounds HE (High explosive)

Hey Mike - thanks for the feedback and awesome info! I've seen all your work and MASSIVE collection on Fireflyfans.net and I'm probably not alone in thinking you have the most comprehensive collection in the world... In other words, I think I know who I need to turn to for any prop info (other than Badger) in this hobby from now until eternity, lol! :)

After I posted, I found your show-off threads and noticed you were using 30-cal M1 carbine ammo. I'm thinking I'll mask rings in different colors around the casing - think of a resistor - to designate the different kinds of ammo - much like you plan to. But that would also mean removing the bullet on some and modifying or replacing it.

I also hope to find a Dragoon or similar box that already has vintage tools in it - that would really compliment the set! :)

Cheers!

I hadn't really given this any thought before, but seeing what others are doing for their own displays kinda makes me want to try it, lol. What key words should I enter in the "Search" field on eBay to find something like this?

Great timing in your post, Eric! I was just going everywhere and entering "wooden box," "pistol case" etc. and found a really nice & affordable one - seller has plenty of them:

I just got one. The stain would match the 47A colors perfectly! :) Just need to replace the glass and re-do the felt, and voila!
