The box of Strawberries

Episode 1 - Serenity

The box of Strawberries

Postby Bronson BB » Sat May 30, 2009 4:14 pm

In the (true) pilot, Book secures passage aboard Serenity by offering fresh vegetables and REAL food to Kaylee. This is embodied by the small wooden box he presents her with that we find out is full of freshly picked strawberries, and her moment of alone-time with that box a bit later is one of the very better scenes in a very good episode. Here's how I made my own replica of that box.

The cigar box is a Bahia Trinidad 20 Elegante flip-top. The box started out BRIGHT-BRIGHT-BRIGHT orange.

Here's the stamp I downloaded and printed to finish it off, btw.

I had a little trouble matching stains, but the one I made is actually a bit darker than it appears here. Bright lights and flash and all that...

I used a sander to strip the orange box I got, used a razor and wood glue to flip the top of the box upside down where it joins the hinge (the Bahia logo on the inside cover wants to be on the outside cover) and stained the whole thing.
Top that off with a scuffed up green stamp I printed off the interwebz onto a sheet of adhesive printer paper and my (girlfriends) strawberry box looks DEAD on!

The lid on the screen used box just lifts off doesn't it? I left mine loose.

Yeah, you can see it slip a bit in Books hands when he picks the box up to show Kaylee.
I like attached better.

Also, between the two scenes it's in; I think the prop builders maybe messed up construction and asked the actors to manipulate it as though the lid were attached. *shrug*

What do you think, could this be the right one?

Its not the best photo, and it looks like the top edges are rounded. I think I might pick it up anyway until I can find the exact one...
