Zoe's backup pistol

Episode 1 - Serenity

Zoe's backup pistol

Postby F-N-S » Mon Jun 01, 2009 2:18 pm

Does anyone have some pictures of the screen used backup pistol Zoe uses in Serenity?

Here is the one I built. It's made from a Denix Colt 1886 Civil War revolver. I would really like to improve it, but I couldn't find good reference pictures (Outside the holster)

I *think* rob may have posted some pics of it over at RPF when he was showing off Badger's leatherwork.

Not positive on that though.
May have been on the losin' side, still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Better than this?

Also, Badger's site has some images of the pistol in its holster.

That's all I got right now.

Frank,

Its based on a colt 1860 Army, brass frame.

Oddly enough... a local "western" shop/cobbler has these for sale. Might've even had the "brass" version too.

Quick question Badger. The repro of gun in the archives... is that frame accurate to the real pistol?

I'm going out to get a Denix replica today and want to get the frame right. The Denix frame is all brass plated. It's also got a blued barrel and cylinder, which will have to be polished. Looks like some of the brass plating on the Denix will also need to come off- just want to be certain that I don't polish off too much.

The repro is pretty good. It's a Pietta blank firer 1860 Army.

So a part of the frame of the real pistol is not bass then? (I'm thinking of the area above the triger guard, around the cylinder.)

I just got back with my Denix. Looks like the front will need filling where the lever sits.

No, it's just the gripframe and triggerguard in brass, the rest is steel.

Thank ye kindly good Sir!

I did some work on the pistol. Used rubber polishing wheels with my Dremel to get the plating and blackening off in the correct areas. The Denix is cast alumin(i)um so it isn't too hard to polish. The finish on these pistols is usually pretty crappy out of the box considering they're all-metal but with a little work they can turn out ok.

Next up is sanding & oiling up the grips because right now they feel rather dry and rough. I also have to fill in the front area where the barrel-clearing lever used to be. I think I'll fill it up with pewter. It's still going to have a thin seam-line since the pewter will not bond to the alumin(i)um but it's better than having a gaping hole there. Finally, I might open up the right side behind the barrel to match Badger's replica more.

I kinda like this pistol more than Zoe's main rifle since it was modified. While the Mare's Leg is a really cool weapon, I can't really get super-excited about adding one to the collection since it doesn't have any "scifi mods" (except the Serenity versions little brass scope of course) and isn't that rare/unusual (like Dobson's Vektor). Though I suppose sooner or later I'll have to add it just for the completion factor.

Photos forthcoming as soon as it's done...
