Jayne's "thrilling heroics" hat

Episode 2 - The Train Job

Jayne's "thrilling heroics" hat

The hat below was reportedly one of three hats used for production of the Train Job episode. It is not Jayne's hero hat. It may have been worn by a stunt double. The hat was weathered with sweat stains and the like by the prop department.

The images below, and the info above, were taken from an ebay auction where the hat sold for about $425.

Sean,
Was the hat listed as from a reliable source?
The reason I ask is that, knowing the industry and knowing the budget of the show, it's really unlikely there were three stunts and a hero.

On this show, sometimes they never even had a backup, let alone a stunt version.

The hat is a found item and without provenance it's impossible to prove it genuine.

Hey Badger, I don't remember if it was listed as from a reliable source. The only info I wrote down was what I put in the post. I always felt the claims were a bit suspect and I'm pretty sure it didn't have a COA or anything, either - which is why I didn't bid on it. I thought it was odd that they would have had three of these hats! Seemed a bit much.

No matter the validity of the claims, the hat is definitely a good 'replica' of Jayne's, which is why I posted the pics.

Thanks for chiming in on this, though! It's great to have someone here with your knowledge and expertise to give us insight into the show and it's props!

Hey all! I'm new here as I just stumbled onto this forum while perusing the RPF. I've seen reported info that states the "thrilling heroics" hat referred to here is a Filson as shown via the following link:

http://www.filson.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2092421&cp=2064999.2075097

I'm sure it could be weathered to more accurately represent the screen-used one. I haven't purchased one of these myself, but it is definitely on my list.

He also wears the hat in Jaynestown with the ear flaps down and fastened under his chin.

Great to be here and hope to find lots of useful info to put together my Jayne costumes. Hopefully I'll provide some useful info while I'm here, too ;)

Welcome BigGeek! Thanks for the info!

Looking at the pic I posted of the alleged stunt hat, it looks like "Filson" was on the flap. I'm not too sure about the seam down the middle of the hat on the one on the website, though. I don't think Jayne's had that.

I thought he wore the same hat in Jaynestown, too. It's very similar, but definitely not the same. Thanks to Frank (F-N-S) for setting me straight on that. Check out this thread: viewtopic.php?f=12&t=8

Steps to proper aging.

1-Place on head.
2-Rob trains with it.
3-Sweat, then repeat.

That's the one thing people don't seem to get in costuming... aging.

It seems like most people's costumes just got dry cleaned.

Me? I beat the snot out of my clothing by wearing it.
May have been on the losin' side, still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I attend a pirate festival in Key West. Some of those guys wear the same thing all week long. I walked the plank in full attire. For the record...

Never. Do. That.

My wool waistcoat filled up like a sponge. It was like swimming with a dead guy on my back.
